I'm am very interested in your organization. Please let me know the criteria to join. I am an independent contractor in real estate so I don't know if your organization would consider that to be a "women-owned business.

Please advise.
Thanks,
Jacqueline Shearer

The good news is: we've come far enough to recognise slander and abuse. In my own lifetime, i've seen the bar raised many times in the name of tolerance and equality. Everytime i see such obvious injustice, I choose to view it as an opportunity to insure that prejedice dies away by modeling a better way and talking outloud about it to our children and gandchildren. WE couldn't ask for a more glaring example of "how not to be" and "what not to do"!

I long for the day when all African American women, will not be judged by what someone says about us in a song or in a video, but we will be judged individually by the content of our character. I too am appalled with the way we are portrayed in music and movies, but there are women who are not women of color who are portrayed negatively in these same venues. Are they called the same names that Imus used. Why is it, that as an African American woman, I am required on a daily basis to prove to the society at large that I am not the person portrayed in these entertainment venues, where non-African American women do not share that same burden. I am outraged at insinuations that give the impression that it is okay for individuals to call African American women derogatory names, because this is what young African American singers are saying in their songs. How can any rational person accept this logic? One positive result from this situation is that we are having conversations, that allow us to voice our concerns about issues that we confront everyday as women of color.

Flagellation is destructive. Maybe now our young people will see the true price we pay for giving the world the impression that we tolerate misogyny. Fissures are painful, only Imus did not create this crack. He just held up the mirror to our community.

Re: your article on Imus. While I find his comments despicable to say the least, I feel that no "noise" or objections, or outrage is heard about the music that encourages this type of language. In addition, men like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have made really terrible racial as well as anti-semetic comments and have been allowed to simply apologize and go on and hide behind the first amendment. I believe we have to "clean house" on all fronts, rather than encourage a double standard as our media seems to do. I despise any kind of bias toward any race or group; let's work to fix all of it and not just one segment. Thanks.
